VIVA – Scientists have confirmed the speed of sound on the Planet Mars using the equipment attached to the Perseverance Explorer Robot NASA. This tool studies the atmosphere of the Red planet which is very different from the atmosphere Earth.
What they found could affect the way humans communicate when they are on Mars in the future, citing from page Science AlertSunday, March 27, 2022.
The findings suggest that trying to speak in the Martian atmosphere produces a strange effect because sounds are high-pitched and appear to travel faster than bass notes.
From a science perspective, the findings, announced at the 53rd Lunar and Planetary Science Conference by planetary scientist Baptiste Chide of Los Alamos National Laboratory, reveal that high temperature fluctuations on the Martian surface require further investigation.
“The speed of sound is not a physical constant. It can change depending on the density and temperature of the medium through which it travels. The denser the medium, the faster sound travels,” Chide said.
This is why sound travels at about 343 meters (1,125 feet) per second in Earth’s atmosphere at 20 degrees Celsius. Sound travels 1,480 meters per second in water and 5,100 meters per second in steel.
Mars’ atmosphere is much more tenuous than Earth’s, or about 0.020 kg/cubic meter. While on Earth about 1.2 kg/cubic meter. This means that sound will spread out differently on Mars.
