The Tyrolean state elections are still almost a year away, but the FPÖ is already getting down to business on April 8th: Party chairman Markus Abwerzger will again apply for the top candidate in meetings of the state party executive and state party leadership and will probably be elected as expected. He expects “broad approval” in the bodies that will meet in the presence of federal party chairman Herbert Kickl, Abwerzger said in the APA interview.
The federal party chairman will give a “political report” in the meetings, according to Tyrol’s top Blauer. The 46-year-old lawyer and club chairman explained in the Tyrolean state parliament that the choice of top candidate in these bodies is provided for in the party’s statutes. On July 3rd, a regular state party conference of the Tyrolean FPÖ will also take place in Schwaz, at which Abwerzger will once again apply for the chairmanship. He has headed the state party since 2013.
The Tyrolean FPÖ leader announced a tough opposition election campaign, in which the Freedom Party primarily wants to campaign against the “Platter System”. It is high time that this was ended: “The ‘System Platter’ stands for job scams and favoritism. In addition, there is a standstill. Nothing rocks anymore”. The FPÖ is the only party that opposes this system, everyone else would try to sit on the ÖVP’s lap.
A possible coalition with Governor Günther Platter and his followers is therefore out of the question even after the election. However, Abwerzger also identified possible allies in the People’s Party with whom one could work well: “There are many lying in wait.” In the event of a sensitive defeat for the ÖVP, the cards would certainly be reshuffled and other protagonists would take the helm.
In the state elections in 2018, the Tyrolean FPÖ won 15.53 percent or five seats – an increase of more than six percent. According to Abwerzger, the goal for next year’s elections is a “plus” before the result. The state party chairman did not want to commit to an exact percentage for the time being.
