WhatsApp desktop can now be used on up to four devices at the same time and no longer needs an active connection to the iPhone.
The feature is currently in beta. A first test has not shown any problems here so far. In order for you to enjoy the function, you have to re-register the desktop client in WhatsApp on the iPhone with the iPhone. All previously registered web and desktop clients were deregistered by the update.
So far it was with the Desktop-App only possible to have one device online at the same time. The app could be installed and registered on multiple Macs, but it could only be used on one at a time. It had to be switched to the respective Mac each time.

Also, the app required an active connection to the iPhone. It didn’t necessarily have to be in the same network, but it definitely had to be reachable. This is no longer necessary.
Other messengers such as Telegram and Signal, but also Apple’s own iMessage have long supported the possibility of being connected to several devices at the same time. The top dog WhatsApp is not the first here.
The update to the new desktop client can be found in the Mac App Store
