Plotnikova, Meier, Sīlis, Leimane and Ķimele will receive the Theater Day Excellence Awards / Article

As the International Theater Day approaches, the LTDS Board has decided to present the Lilita Bērziņš Award to Mikhail Chekhov’s Riga Russian Theater actress Veronika Plotnikova for her outstanding performance during the last seasons and her artistic work for many years.

The Harry Liepins Award will be presented to Valmiera Drama Theater actor Mārtiņš Meiers for outstanding acting, contribution to the art of theater and confidence in himself and his profession during previous seasons.

The Eduards Smiļģis Prize is awarded to director Valters Sīlis for his significant, courageous and artistically high-quality work in recent seasons, creating socially active and intellectually saturated performances on important issues of today’s society and history in theaters of various sizes and status in all Baltic countries. – both in the state, local government and independent projects and festivals, but especially in the Latvian National Theater.

The Helena Tangiev-Birzniece Award will be presented to Elza Leimane, the leading ballet soloist of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet, for outstanding success in the performing arts of ballet performances, as well as for active work as a dance choreographer.

The Jēkabs Duburs Prize will be awarded to Professor Māra Ķimele of the Latvian Academy of Culture for almost 50 years of work in theater pedagogy, proving her inexhaustible energy, creative spirit and professional responsibility, proving her ability to combine creative and pedagogical work by teaching both young actors and young directors.

The award ceremony will take place on the birthday of Latvian theater art on June 2 at the Eduards Smiļģis Theater Museum. The winners will be awarded medals created by the artist Māris Šustiņš.

Candidates for the award are recommended by the Latvian Professional Theater, the Latvian National Opera and Ballet, theater critics, the Latvian Professional Ballet Association, the Latvian Academy of Culture and the Eduards Smiļģis Theater Museum.
