Man Utd urged to sell Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire if Erik Ten Hag is hired

Manchester United have been urged to sell ‘troublemakers’ Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire if Erik ten Hag is appointed as their next manager.

Ten Hag is believed to be one of the leading candidates to take over Old Trafford when caretaker boss Ralf Rangnick takes on a consulting role. The Dutchman has impressed during his five-year spell in charge of Ajax, drawing admiring glances from many top clubs.

But some concerns have been raised about how Ten Hag would handle the move to a club the size of Old Trafford. He has grown accustomed to working with brilliant young diamonds in the rough at the Johan Cruyff Arena, rather than the superstars a club of United’s stature is expected to possess.

Despite those concerns, Ten Hag remains one of the favorites to receive the job, which will involve a serious period of rebuilding. And to kick-start that rebuild, former Netherlands international Rene van der Gijp has given the Red Devils some surprising advice.

The former winger believes United should sell top scorer Ronaldo and captain Maguire this summer. Van der Gijp hopes that will give Ten Hag the best chance of succeeding in rebuilding him.

“I did not expect. A club like this also wants a signing, of course. It’s not. A Zidane, for example, would be. He just needs to get rid of those troublemakers. Ronaldo, Pogba, Maguire. Ronaldo would get on well with Zidane. They are on the same level,” Van der Gijp told Vendaag Inside.

Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo have been branded ‘troublemakers’ and Manchester United told him to sell both

United only signed Ronaldo last summer, but the Portuguese attacker has been criticized for his poor body language during the current campaign despite scoring 18 goals in all competitions. Meanwhile, Maguire has endured a disappointing season, with his suitability for the role of United captain in doubt.

Decisions about the duo’s future will be at the top of Ten Hag’s to-do list as he looks to trade the Red Devils. It remains to be seen if he follows Van der Gijp’s advice, but it would be quite a statement of intent from a new manager.
