THE BALL – «As long as I am not a national champion…» (Benfica)

In an interview with Zerozero, Everton took on the difficulties in adapting to Portuguese football. At the beginning of last season, the Brazilian international was signed by Benfica from Grêmio for 20 million euros and in this he has seven goals and as many assists in 41 games.

“The first season was difficult. I had spent eight years at the same club and the change is very difficult. Not only the change of place where we are going to live, but also the place where we are going to work. The tactical, technical and physical change that European football requires is much greater than what I was used to. I came from two very strong seasons, where I didn’t have a vacation. I had the Copa America, I didn’t have a vacation for three seasons and that ends up hurting a little, but I believe that, with each week, with each training session, I have felt more comfortable and more at home to perform my work and help my club», said the number 7 of the eagles, explaining the differences between Portuguese and South American football.

“South American football is tougher, Libertadores is a very firm competition, as we say. Here, the tactical part is very evolved, from the first to the last classified. Tactically, the teams are very evolved and that makes the work of the forwards difficult. We have to look for spaces. It’s more open football. At Luz, many teams come to the point and make our work difficult, but we are prepared for that.”

Everton also revealed the individual “obsession” and also that of the entire squad in managing to lead Benfica to the title of national champion, something that has eluded the eagles since 2019.

«I want to win titles with Benfica’s jersey, I want to be national champion and as long as I don’t, I won’t forgive myself. It is a group and individual obsession. It is a very important competition that Benfica has not won and I want to win titles here”, explained the Brazilian.
