Netflix just got a new original movie that you definitely need to watch. No, I’m not referring to The Adam Project, which rose to the top of Netflix’s most-watched list over the weekend. Instead, I’m talking about Windfall.
Have you never heard of Windfall? I’m not surprised. The thriller appears to have fallen into the loopholes, as the big red streaming service decided to focus its marketing efforts on Ryan Reynolds’ latest film. Still, Windfall is worth looking into, even if Netflix’s algorithm doesn’t seem to give it much love.
Windfall is a one-location thriller that follows a heist gone wrong. After a thief breaks into the vacation home of a wealthy tech CEO, he is forced to take Kotb and his wife hostage after they unexpectedly show up at the house. Things quickly spiral out of control as all three parties search for a way out of this impasse.
The film stars Jason Segel as the thief, Jesse Plemons as the CEO, and Lily Collins as his wife. Collins is no stranger to Netflix, as her Netflix special Emily in Paris was renewed for seasons three and four earlier this year. Segel is also a familiar face to many after he played Marshall Eriksen on the popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother for nine years.
Windfall is the perfect Netflix movie
All three main cast members are excellent, but the interaction between Segel and Plemons is a special distinction. But Collins also goes to extremes, and her character has the most emotional depth of the trio with an arc that takes some interesting turns.
The stroke of luck is going very well. The watch works at a hair’s breadth for 90 minutes and flies perfectly. It’s certainly not an action thriller, with a heavy emphasis on well-written dialogue, but it’s never boring thanks to a strong central performance and an expertly crafted sense of unpredictability. No spoilers here, but you definitely won’t see the ending coming.
If you’re looking for something to watch next, why not try Netflix’s latest true crime series, Bad Vegan; It was showered with praise and even got a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
March is shaping up to be a big month for Netflix with the release of the second season of Bridgeton on Friday, although recent news that the operator is once again looking to crack down on Netflix password sharing is disappointing.
