L “Dio vi salvi Regina” resounds this Monday night in the market square of Bastia. A few candles were placed on the steps at the foot of St. John the Baptist Church for what looks like an impromptu vigil. In front of this imposing iconic Baroque building in the city, a group of young nationalists sing the Corsican anthem a cappella. This religious song has a very precise symbolism. At the beginning of the XVIIIe century, this canticle dedicated to the Virgin was chosen as a “national emblem” by the insurgents who proclaimed the sovereignty of Corsica after five centuries of Genoese domination. Last night it was widely performed across the island as a tribute to Yvan Colonna.
