Kiev –
Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said his party had beaten back the troops Russia in several areas around the capital city Ukraine Kiev. He even vowed to defend every building in Kiev from Russian attacks.
As reported by AFP on Wednesday (23/3/2022), Vitali Klitschko said there was fighting raging in the northern and eastern suburbs of the city of Kiev. Several cities, he said, had even been in the hands of Ukrainian troops.
“The small town of Makariv and almost all of Irpin is already under the control of the Ukrainian army,” Klitschko said.
For information Irpin borders Kiev to the east, Makariv is located about 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of Kiev.
There was intense artillery fire in the Irpin and Lyutizh areas north of Kiev. Even Ukrainian news agencies talk about a possible troop siege Russia in Irpin, as well as Bucha and Hostomel, located on the western outskirts of Kiev.
While returning to Klitschko, he said he had no more detailed information about the ongoing Ukrainian counterattack. He called their attempts to encircle and enter the city of Kiev had failed.
“The target of the aggressor is the Ukrainian capital, because it is the heart of the country,” Klitschko told a news conference in a city park overlooking the Dnipro river.
He urged Russian troops to return home and said Ukrainian troops were ready to defend every building in Kiev. He insisted Ukraine was better off dying than on its knees to the occupiers.
“We would rather die than kneel in front of Russia or surrender to the occupiers,” Klitschko said.
“We are ready to fight for every building, every street, every part of our city,” he continued.
