The chairman of the European People’s Party group in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber, today called for an investigation into the detention of GERB chairman Boyko Borissov last week.

This European Parliament has been united in the fight for the rule of law in the EU in recent years, Weber said. This is an important issue for us, on which we are united in a supra-party. Last week in one EU member state, an opposition leader was detained for 24 hours in the absence of a formal indictment and a prosecutor’s order without the involvement of a prosecutor. It was just an instruction from the interior minister, a politician who arrested the opposition leader. Today, a court in Sofia has ruled that the minister’s action is illegal, inconsistent with the law in Sofia and Bulgaria. Therefore, we are witnessing a break with the rule of law mechanism. I would like to put this issue on the agenda, and I would like to ask the European Commission and the EP’s legal service to look into this case carefully. We are for the fight against corruption, it is something that we all support, but this fight against corruption must take place on the basis of the rule of law, and they were violated in Bulgaria and this should be clarified, Weber concluded.
