Due to the ongoing pandemic, many companies have only held their job interviews online in recent months. It seemed like a good solution for a while, but the downside is becoming more and more apparent. “Some applicants, for example, don’t take these online interviews seriously enough because of their familiar home environment,” says experienced HR expert Tobias Zulauf.
“In addition, the applicant’s body language is very difficult to recognize and read via video,” says the expert. This is very meaningful for HR professionals. In this guest article, Zulauf will be happy to tell you what other reasons speak in favor of conducting at least one face-to-face job interview.
differentiated impression
In a personal interview, HR managers have the opportunity to gain a much more differentiated impression of the applicants – and thus the basis for a better assessment. This begins with the type of greeting. In addition, HR managers can assess how their interlocutors deal with them and what form of small talk they have. The face-to-face interview is also important in order to be able to take a close look at the body language of the applicants. In this way, HR managers have a much better basis for deciding whether potential employees are a good fit for their colleagues and the company.
build up trust
A face-to-face job interview gives HR managers and colleagues as well as applicants the opportunity to get to know each other on a personal level. In this way, all those involved can build up a basic level of trust in one another. What many entrepreneurs and HR managers do not know: Candidates primarily choose their new colleagues and secondarily the company. So if I deprive the candidate of the chance to get a real and lasting impression of their future colleagues, the probability is higher that the candidate will choose a competitor.
In this way, they can highlight the special features and advantages of their own company and provide potential employees with arguments for cooperation, so that they ultimately decide in favor of their company.
Higher commitment of the applicants
If a face-to-face interview takes place, the HR managers can be sure that the applicants are seriously interested in working together. They often have to travel long distances and invest a lot of time in such an interview. In doing so, they make a clear commitment to their application and subconsciously commit themselves to the company. In this way, HR professionals separate insecure applicants from qualified prospects.
