Blood donation operation by United Nations personnel in Niger: confirmation of a civic commitment

Mrs. Louise Aubin, Ambassador, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Niger, accompanied by Heads of Agencies, went on March 17 to the National Blood Transfusion Center (CNTS) in Niamey for a blood donation operation. This gesture of solidarity is organized as a prelude to the 1st Edition of the Citizens’ Week Forum of the Republic initiated by the Association of Young Leaders for the Positive Transformation of Conflicts in Niger (AJLTPC / Niger) and which took place from March 17 to 20 2022.

The main objective of this initiative is to raise awareness of the need for blood and blood products for transfusion, but also to raise awareness of the essential contribution of blood donors to the smooth running of the national health system.

In her speech, the United Nations Coordinator indicated that the donation of blood is like the gift of time: the most precious thing we have but which is more easily offered than we think. It doesn’t take much to save a life. One cannot imagine a more concrete gesture of solidarity.

Ms. Louise Aubin took this opportunity to launch a vibrant appeal to the population, to follow in the footsteps of voluntary and voluntary donors to accomplish this civic act, in order to save lives. A simple anonymous and altruistic gesture makes it possible to reach thousands of men, young mothers and children whose lives are in danger.

Several diseases require blood transfusion. These are generally anemia situations in which pregnant women, sickle cell patients, accidents or simply those who suffer from chronic anemia can find themselves.

In Niamey, the need is great and all of the city’s health facilities get their supplies only from the Regional Blood Transfusion Center (CRTS). According to the officials of the center, this structure can only meet 1/3 of the demand, with an average of 100 donors per day.

The 1st edition of the Citizens’ Week of the Republic will take place from March 17 to 20, 2022 and will be a framework for exchanges and participatory dialogue aimed at promoting the commitment of young people and adolescents from all areas of the country, around societal issues debated through High Level Panels, Public Conferences and Outreach Caravans.
