MOSCOW Russia will use nuclear weapons if you feel threatened. This was stated by a spokesperson Kremlin Dmitry Peskov.

Asked by CNN whether the idea of nuclear war was still being discussed during the war with Ukraine, Peskov said that only “existential” threats were sufficient to justify the use of nukes in war.

“Well, we have a concept of domestic security, and it’s public,” Peskov said.

“You can read all the reasons for using nuclear weapons. So if it is an existential threat, a threat to our country, then it can be used according to our concept,” he added. NewsweekWednesday (23/3/2022).

Peskov’s remarks came shortly after Russia claimed it had used hypersonic missiles for the first time in combat against Ukrainian forces. Although it could not be independently confirmed, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said a Kinzhal hypersonic missile had been used, a move that could signal an escalation in the conflict.

“The Kinzhal aviation missile system with hypersonic aeroballistic missiles destroyed a large arsenal of missiles and aviation ammunition of Ukrainian troops in the village of Delyatyn, Ivano-Frankivsk region,” Konashenkov said, according to Russia’s state-owned news agency RIA.

While the potential use of hypersonic and nuclear missiles could stoke fears of escalation around the world, it is possible that a ceasefire could be imminent. According to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, there are enough solutions on the negotiating table that Russia and Ukraine can agree on. If so, a truce can be called.
