Volkswagen is increasing production faster than expected. Renault also continues in Moscow

Volkswagen is one of those who were forced to reduce production of their vehicles due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, at factories in Zwickau, Dresden and Wolfsburg. It is there, as the Automotive News Europe website quotes, that production of the Golf will increase by a second shift on Wednesday of this week. The third shift is due in the coming weeks.

However, it will take longer for production to start at the Zwickau and Dresden factories, the carmaker continues. In Cvikov, Volkswagen produces the Audi Q4 e-tron, Cupra Born and Volkswagen cars from the ID family, ie all electric cars on the MEB platform. This is also shared by the Škoda Enyaq iV, which is manufactured in Mladá Boleslav and was also affected by the war in Ukraine.

In connection with the war, the carmakers experienced the biggest shortage of cable harnesses produced in Ukraine. The Volkswagen Group has sought to make up for this shortcoming by increasing production in Romania, Hungary, Tunisia, Morocco, Mexico and China, where these parts are also being developed.

However, in contrast to the increase in production in Wolfsburg, the interruption of production at the Volkswagen plant in Bratislava is early this week. The reason is, of course, the lack of components, which the carmaker noticed in connection with the situation in war-torn Ukraine, but also the persistent lack of chips.

The main part of the production of the Volkswagen plant in Bratislava, which is one of the largest employers in the country, consists of SUVs. In addition to the Škoda Karoq, there are also the Audi Q7, Audi Q8, Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne. The outage in parts deliveries for one day also stopped production at the Hyundai car plant in Nošovice near Frýdek-Místek. Employees miss three shifts.

Production was also resumed at the Renault plant in Moscow, which has been in operation since the end of February; The carmaker then claimed that the reason was “forced change in existing logistics routes”. This plant produces renaults exclusively for the Russian market – models Duster, Kaptur and Arkana. However, the carmaker did not state how long the production should run.

For the time being, Renault remains in Russia, despite the sanctions imposed on the country and, according to a website that links to Reuters, with the support of its majority shareholder, the French state.

The resumption of production at the Moscow factory contrasts with the closure of the AvtoVAZ factory in Izhevsk, which also belongs to Renault. In this plant, Renault Logan and Sandero are created for the Russian market, as well as Lada models.
