Unity shows photorealistic graphics in teaser video

Unreal Engine 5 has dominated the media space lately with both game demos and videos showing what the game engine can do. In connection with the Game Developers Conference, the competitor Unity has released a video that shows that the company’s game engine is still in the game. In the video, dubbed Enemies, we see a rendering of a woman playing chess.

The video demonstrates Unity’s ability to render almost photorealistic models in real time, with hair and skin that looks and moves naturally. Unity writes that the game engine has received improvements in its High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP), a new adaptive lighting system and updated character tools.

Enemies uses the entire feature set of Unity’s High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP), Screen Space Global Illumination (SSGI), the new Adaptive Probe Volumes, ray tracing, NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), and every other feature, big or small, that is relevant for our goals.

The improvements in the game engine have, among other things, taken place in connection with Unity’s purchase of Peter Jackson VFX-studio Weta Workshop, which took place before the turn of the year. The system behind the character’s hair will also be compatible with Weta Workshop’s Barbershop software, which has been used to create hair in the later Planet of the Apes films.

Visitors to GDC 2022 will have the opportunity to take a closer look at Unity in the coming days. The hair system and the new tools are planned to be implemented in Unity in no more than two months.

Do you want to see more games with photorealistic graphics or do you prefer other styles?
