After two years of absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the New York half-marathon made its comeback yesterday Monday. The Kenyan Rhonex Kipruto won in the men’s category, while the Ethiopian Senbere Teferi dominated the women’s race, offering herself the event record. She improved on the time set by American Molly Huddle in 2017.
Two Africans flew over the New York half-marathon, which made its comeback, yesterday Monday March 21, 2022, after two years of absence, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Kenyan Rhonex Kipruto, who won the men’s race with a new course record of 1 hour 00 minutes 30 seconds, ahead of the 10 km world record holder, his compatriot Edward Cheserek (1 hour 00 minutes 37 seconds) and the ‘Ethiopian Teshome Mekonen (1 hour 00 minute 40 seconds).
Among the ladies, the Ethiopian Senbere Teferi won with a time of 1 hour 07 minutes 35 seconds. Kenyan Irine Cheptai takes second place in 1 hour 07 minutes 42 seconds. Third place went to Karoline Grovdal (1 hour 08 minutes 07 seconds). For the Norwegian, four-time national record holder, the performance in New York is a new personal best.
Remember that in 2021, the Ethiopian Senbere Teferi (26) made heads turn by winning the world record for 5 km on the road with a finish time of 14 minutes 29 seconds, during an event in Herzogenaurach (Germany).
