Defeat for Bayer’s basketball players

Krefeld In the first round of promotion to the regional league, the team lost 58:69 to Mettmann-Sport. Since the Koerver Hall is no longer available, the club is looking for alternative halls.
The SC Bayer 05 Uerdingen basketball department had to vacate its home arena, the Josef-Koerver-Halle, last week due to refugees from the Ukraine and is now waiting for a final solution from the city of Krefeld. In the meantime, there was a severe setback for the 1st men’s team of Uerdinger in the promotion race to the regional league.

“On Wednesday we received a letter from the city of Krefeld that our home arena was needed immediately to accommodate refugees from the Ukraine,” reported department head Tobias Langguth: “We would have liked to have been informed by the city at an early stage so that we could start planning to be able to.”

Of course, Langguth fully understands the situation: “Helping is important. From our point of view, this is a matter of course. But of course we as a sports club have to see that we can keep our training and game operations going. And that’s currently not possible. Especially now that more is possible again after the Corona pandemic, we had hoped that our children and young people in particular would be able to play basketball again without restrictions.

The sporting director of Uerdinger is working in a team of four to reschedule the training sessions and the games: “On Wednesday we had to quickly see which teams had important games and prioritize the units. We were only able to complete six of the remaining 27 units. And thanks to good contacts, we were able to play the games for the weekend in Willich and Meerbusch.”

What is the basketball department expecting? “We’re hoping for quick feedback from the city. The last statement was that they would work flat out to find a solution. Solidarity throughout Krefeld sport is also required. Free training sessions that can be distributed should be made available to other clubs,” reports Langguth. Already in 2015 and 2016 the Koerver-Halle was needed for refugees.

The first men’s team, which is fighting for promotion, was also affected at the weekend. “Our preparation for the promotion round and the first game against Mettmann was anything but optimal. Our unit on Wednesday was cancelled, on Friday we had to train in a smaller hall and on Saturday we played the game in the Kurt-Tucholsky-Halle,” reports Bayer captain Robin Naber.

In the first game of the promotion round, SC Bayer was beaten by the Mettmann-Sport team 58:69. “We can still be satisfied with the first three quarters. But in the end Mettmann beat us with his own means and won the match with quick switching. Now we are under pressure and actually have to win all the games,” explains Naber.
