In the first months of this year, consumers consumed around 15 percent less gas than last year. That is what several energy companies say when asked by the NOS. This is mainly because the winter is less cold than last year, but also because people are more economical with gas because of the high prices.
Last year it was possible to skate in large parts of the country in February, this year it was only a little bit freezing. “In the first two months of this year, we saw a 16.3 percent decrease in average gas consumption among customers,” says an Essent spokesperson. “In February 2021 we had two very cold weeks and now we don’t. But people are now also more alert to their gas consumption.”
‘Be more conscious with energy’
Delta Energie saw a 16.7 percent reduction in gas consumption among private and small business customers in January and February. “That is largely due to the warmer weather this winter,” said a spokesperson. “But if you eliminate the influence of the weather, we still see a difference. We think that people are now more conscious about energy and have also taken measures, such as insulation.”
