Windows 11 doesn’t have a built-in screen recorder, but there is one tucked into the preloaded Xbox Game Bar.

One big drawback of this screen recorder is that it doesn’t record the Windows desktop or File Explorer.

You must activate the window, or recording will not start.

It also ends if you switch to File Explorer or desktop.

  • You can press Windows key + Alt + R to enable and disable the recorder, or use the steps below.
  • Press Windows key + G simultaneously to open the Xbox Game Bar overlay.
  • Click the Record button present in the Capture window at the top left side of the screen.
  • To stop recording, click the Stop recording button on the floating widget that shows the recording progress.
  • You’ll get an Xbox-style notification saying Game clip recorded, confirming that the screen recording was successful.

Screen recording clips captured by the Xbox Game Bar will automatically save the file to the capture folder.

This is usually located in Drive C -> Users -> Your Username -> Video -> Capture.
