New York.- The University of North Carolina men’s basketball team spent part of December overwhelmed by Kentucky. The month of January brought more humiliation in Miami and Wake Forest. February included getting clobbered on home court by Duke and Pittsburgh and going into overtime to beat Syracuse, which hadn’t performed well either.
Then came March, the Tar Heels eliminated Duke and ruined Mike Krzvzewski’s final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium on March 5.
Then, this Saturday, in overtime in Fort Worth, Texas, they defeated Baylor, which is the first seed in the East of the Regional and the reigning national champion, to advance to the round of 16 of the NCAA tournament.
Each one of those iconic victories can redeem any loony season. But do both?
As former North Carolina coach Roy Williams would say: “Fuck.”
The eighth-seeded Tar Heels will face UCLA St. Mary’s this Friday in Philadelphia.
