Football – Freiburg im Breisgau – damper in the fight for promotion: FCK struggles with zero number – sport

Freiburg (dpa / lrs) – The disappointment about the meager 0-0 at SC Freiburg II was visible to the players and those responsible at 1. FC Kaiserslautern. For the Red Devils, the zero number on Saturday was an unplanned damper in the fight for promotion to the 3rd football league. “We can’t be satisfied with that,” said FCK coach Marco Antwerpen. Due to the draw, the Palatinate are second in the table with 57 points, only two points ahead of pursuers 1. FC Saarbrücken, who defeated Hallesche FC 2-1.

Before the international break, Antwerp therefore sent a small challenge to their opponents in the promotion race: “We’re still second, we’re still being hunted and we’re able to hold our own against the competition.” The final spurt of the season begins against MSV Duisburg on April 2nd. “Now it’s time to recharge the batteries and then we’ll approach every game as if it were a final,” said goalkeeper Matheo Raab.

In Freiburg there was little to see of this attitude, especially in the first half. “We didn’t do enough for the game,” complained Antwerp. Raab took a similar stance: “We actually intended to get into the tackles directly and show that we want to win here. But we didn’t succeed at all. That was definitely one of our worse first halves.”

Antwerp reacted during the break and brought on Hikmet Ciftci and Daniel Hanslik for Felix Götze and Kenny Prince Redondo. FCK immediately had more access in midfield and created some good opportunities. “We had to adjust a lot and then in the second 45 minutes you saw what would have been possible here. If we could still make it 1-0, it would certainly have been a bit lucky, but we would have taken that with us,” Antwerpen said .

The only thing that made the 50-year-old happy was the 5,000 or so fans who traveled with him, creating a great atmosphere in the Dreisam Stadium. “Our fans were just impressive. It felt like a home game. The amount of support they ripped off was unbelievable,” praised Antwerp.
