China’s Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng said NATO should not expand further east, driving a nuclear-capable Russia “into a corner.” He said this at a security forum in Beijing, reports Reuters.

He also spoke out against anti-Russian sanctions, saying that Russian citizens are deprived of foreign assets allegedly “without any reason.”
“History has proven time and time again that sanctions cannot solve problems. Sanctions will only harm ordinary people, affect the economic and financial system … and worsen the state of the global economy,” the Chinese official said.
Meanwhile, adviser to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Mykhailo Podolyak declared today that the PRC “may become an important element of the global security system, if it makes the right decision – to support the coalition of civilized countries and condemn the barbarism of the Russian Federation.”
“This is a chance to sit at the table on an equal footing. Europeans and Americans should clearly explain to Beijing the difference between $1.6 trillion and $150 billion (China’s trade with Western countries and the Russian Federation, respectively. – Ed.),” Podolyak wrote on Twitter.
