a swim organized this Saturday in front of the Mucem to demand the creation of a public swimming pool

This large swimming pool at the foot of the Marseilles museum is organized on the initiative of the association “Les Libres nageurs” which claims the opening of an open and public swimming pool for the swimmers of the city.

They want to “move the water lines”. Several swimmers will meet this Saturday afternoon for a deep swim just in front of the Mucem (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations) located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea in the 2nd arrondissement of Marseille.

This operation is carried out on the initiative of the association “Les Libres nageurs” which explains that it works for “the protection of the coast and for the promotion of swimming in open water”. Their action, presented by the collective as a “reclaiming bath , illicit and solidarity”, had already been organized last year.

“A major public health issue”

The members of the association campaign for the creation of an open and public swimming pool at the foot of the Mucem. They believe that the city of Marseille does not have enough public basins and that access to the sea “is extremely limited”. This new swimming pool would therefore be, according to them, an opportunity to offer more accessibility to the aquatic environment for people from the city center and the northern districts.

“We believe as hard as Cassis stone that sport is not only a matter of the Olympic Games but a major issue of public health and social cohesion”, explain “Les Libres nageurs” on their Facebook page.

The members of the collective now hope that their open swimming pool project will be studied by elected officials and Marseille services. Concerning the water point located near the Marseilles museum, it is the Metropolis which holds the responsibility.

However, the community reminds from the Made in Marseille website, that the basin near the Mucem is attached to the Old Port of the city and is therefore designed to accommodate boats. Swimming is strictly prohibited.

Despite this, the Free Swimmers intend to bring together the Marseillais supporting their project, Saturday at 4.30 p.m. on the banks of the Mucem in the “most beautiful swimming pool in Marseille”. A workshop for making the water line of the basin at sea is even planned from 3:30 p.m.
