Virtual meeting almost two hours between President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping does not relieve worries AS over the possibility China send military or financial aid to Russia.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the United States would continue to monitor President Xi Jinping’s actions closely for the foreseeable future.
“We have that concern. The president detailed the implications and consequences if China provides material support to Russia for carrying out brutal attacks on Ukrainian cities and civilians,” Jen Psaki said.
“And that’s what we will pay attention to and the world will see,” Psaki said CNNFriday (18/3).
In the call, Biden did not offer a specific request to Xi Jinping about the war in Ukraine that is still going on to this day.
“China has to make its own decisions about where they want to stand, how the history books see them and see their actions,” Psaki said.
“That is a decision President Xi has to make.”
Psaki also said Biden would discuss the results of his communications with China when he meets NATO and G7 leaders in Brussels next week.
Earlier, Chinese state media CCTV reported that President Xi Jinping said China and the US had a responsibility to ensure peace.
“As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and the world’s two largest economies, we must not only lead the development of China-US relations on the right track,” Xi said. CNNFriday (18/3).
“But (China and the US) also bear international responsibilities and make efforts for world peace and tranquility,” Xi said.
He also mentioned that no one is interested in conflict. He underlined that peace is a treasure of the international community.
He did not forget to discuss the situation in Ukraine which he called the crisis. China has so far refused to condemn Russia’s actions against Ukraine. Nor do they call it an invasion.
“The world is neither peaceful nor calm. The Ukrainian crisis is something we don’t want to see,” Xi said.
