After weeks of conflict, the European Union wants to work with the United States to “rebuild” Ukraine by the war started by the Russian invasion, said the vice president of the European Commission (EC) for Interinstitutional Relations, Marcos Sefcovic, on a visit to Washington. During a meeting with journalists, Sefcovic said that the visit of the US president, Joe Biden, next week to Brussels is “very important” not only to deal with the current course of the war, but to be prepared for the future.
“We will have to cooperate together to, hopefully sooner rather than later, rebuild Ukraine. I will need enormous support to rebuild their houses, their infrastructure and attract investment,” he said. The vice president of the Community Executive also advocated maintaining a “permanent contact” with Washington to monitor the functioning of the sanctions and detect if “gaps” are generated.
Sefcovic also addressed during his meetings with members of the US Administration rising energy pricesWell, he said, the EU is “bearing a fairly significant burden.” For this reason, he opted to replace fossil fuels with renewable energies and improve the infrastructure to reduce dependence on Russian oil and gas. In that sense, he gave as an example the fact that Spain and Portugal have “highly developed” liquefied natural gas plants.
Sefcovic began a working tour of the United States on Monday to meet in Washington with members of the Administration and Congress, with whom address the Ukrainian crisis and the energy transition. The Vice President of the Community Executive will also meet with businessmen and students in San Francisco (California) and will visit the Panasonic and Tesla battery plant in Nevada.
