Former President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, may be extradited to the United States. That has been decided by a judge in the country. Hernández is suspected of drug smuggling and illegal possession of weapons and was arrested for this last month.
Until the beginning of this year, Hernández was president of Honduras. He would have been involved in drug smuggling between 2004 and 2022. US prosecutors say he funded his political career with drug money. He would also have taken millions of dollars in bribes, with which he protected drug traffickers from police investigation.
Hernández himself has always denied the allegations. He says that deported convicts for drug crimes want to put him in a bad light.
The former president has three days to appeal. His brother is already serving a life sentence in the US for large-scale drug smuggling.
