Covid-19 in France: 145 new deaths, positive cases and hospital admissions on the rise


The scientific council judges that “the epidemic is not over”, while most restrictions were lifted on Monday. The government is betting on a peak in the epidemic by “end of March”. On average over the past week, positive cases have increased by +33%. This Wednesday, Public Health France identified 108,832 in 24 hours, including a catch-up part. On Tuesday the number had been underestimated due of a “technical incident”.

The increase in new cases is reflected in the hospital. Over one week, daily hospitalizations have thus increased by +10%. According to figures from Public Health France, 20,757 people are hospitalized this Wednesday being positive for Covid-19. They were 21,509 a week ago and 20,919 the day before. There were 1,313 new entries on Wednesday, compared to 1,147 a week ago.

Among these patients, there are 1,728 patients treated in critical care services (1,962 seven days ago), which receive the most serious cases. 97 new patients had to join these services on Tuesday. They were 120 to enter there seven days ago.

In the past 24 hours, 145 deaths of people positive for Covid-19 have been recorded by French hospitals. Over a week, daily deaths fell by -11%. But in total, it is 140,613 people who have died since the start of the pandemic.

Nearly 40 million people received a booster dose

On the vaccination side, 39,348,018 people received a booster dose, according to the Directorate General of Health. Since the start of the vaccination campaign in France, 54,262,966 people have received at least one injection (i.e. 80.5% of the total population1) and 53,334,089 people now have a complete vaccination schedule (i.e. 79.1% of the total population).
