Piet Bukman (CDA), former Minister of Agriculture and Speaker of the House, passed away

Piet Bukman, former Minister of Agriculture and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, has passed away. His party, the CDA, has confirmed this. Bukman started his political career in the ARP, one of the predecessors of the CDA.

CDA party leader Wopke Hoekstra says in a response that Bukman has built up a great track record in party and politics over many years. “As the first party chairman, after the merger of ARP, KVP and CHU in 1980, he formed the basis of our association. Looking after your loved ones was very important to him.”

According to party chairman Pieter Heerma, Bukman understood the art of choosing the right moment for the compromise. “He has meant a lot to our country.”

The horticulturist’s son Bukman rose from director of the Christian Agriculture and Horticulture Association to a member of the Senate, Minister of Development Cooperation, State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Minister of Agriculture, Member of Parliament and Speaker of the House.

Piet Bukman was 88 years old.
