Ambon City Government Targets to Stop Malaria Transmission This Year

Data from the health office for the last three years there are no cases of malaria in Ambon.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, AMBON — The Ambon City Government targets to eliminate or stop the transmission of malaria in April 2022. The head of the Ambon City Health Service, Wendy Pelupessy, said that the data from the Health Service for the last three years had no malaria cases in Ambon. “So we target malaria elimination in 2022,” he said in Ambon, Tuesday (15/3/2022).

Malaria elimination, he said, is an activity to stop local transmission of malaria in a certain geographic area. This does not mean that the factors causing malaria have been eliminated or that no malaria cases have been reported at all.

“Elimination means there are no new cases with local transmission, but imported cases may still exist, so activities are still needed to overcome them,” he said.

He admitted, every week his party scheduled inspection of mosquito larvae, counseling and provision of insecticide nets for pregnant women, the elderly and children. Antimalarial insecticide mosquito nets are distributed to all residents, both well-to-do and economically disadvantaged families, considering that the mosquito nets are not sold freely.

The policy is expected to protect the public, especially pregnant women and children under five, from the transmission of malaria. “We routinely check with the community whether the mosquito nets provided by the officers are used or just stored, as well as checks. We are trying to prevent malaria cases by checking congenital cases from Papua and other regions,” he said.

The government itself targets Malaria-free Indonesia by 2030. Malaria prevention and control efforts have been included in the national priority programs and strategic plans (renstra) of the Ministry of Health.
