The Groninger Gasberaad, a collective of social organizations in the earthquake area, also heaves a sigh of relief. Chairman Jan Wigboldus calls the cabinet plans “good news”.
“Gas extraction is going up a little bit, but in the whole context it is marginal. The difference between what it is now and the amount that was foreseen: that should be doable. Also in terms of safety aspects here in the province.” Wigboldus concludes: the plans of the State Secretary give “a little more confidence again”.
Final Closure
The GGB is not yet completely convinced. “What also struck us was that Vijlbrief said he is trying to shut down gas production completely. But we want to keep him to that,” said Jonkheid.
Vijlbrief still wants the gas tap to be closed permanently in 2023 or 2024. However, he said today that he does not know how the geopolitical conditions are developing, so he is keeping his mouth shut.
