The events in Ukraine are accelerating the decisions of the States. Germany, which for years had been hesitating over how to renew its fleet of old Tornado planes, has decided. Berlin is expected to buy 35 F-35 fighter jets from Lockheed Martin for an amount that would be around 6 billion euros. Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht has confirmed the order, but has not yet given any details.
With 35 planes, Germany would order what is strictly necessary to fulfill its nuclear mission for NATO. The German Tornado, ancestors of the Eurofighters, are in fact certified to carry the B-61 nuclear bombs stored by the Americans in Europe as part of NATO’s deterrence policy.
