Of Matteo Cruccu

The singer presents the new album: «So Happy It Hurts»: «It doesn’t clash with war, we artists have the duty to give hope». And on the photograph: “I wouldn’t go to Ukraine”

«Happy to die»: while nightmares appear in the world that we hoped were buried by history, pandemics and conflicts, it is difficult to think that anyone has joy to spread with both hands. Yet that someone is there, even if this “happiness in excess” does not mean it is a question of laughable superficiality. We are talking about Bryan Adams, eternal Canadian poprocker, 15 albums and 100 million records, songs like “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” which have helped to generate many children, when they went slow, 62 years brought dry and a career that is now divided with his other great passion, photography. It has obviously become a profession since he signed the latest, prestigious Pirelli calendar, joining sacred monsters such as Richard Avedon and Annie Leibovitz.

But, via zoom, in a white T-shirt, he is here to talk about his primeval occupation, music. And the new album is called “So Happy It Hurts”, happy as hell. So you don’t clash with the present moment? «No-he answers firmly-. In the last decade we have already experienced similar situations in Afghanistan and Syria. It does not seem very different to me in Ukraine, net of the enormous suffering that conflicts create. When I made “Waking up the Neighbors” twenty years ago, there was the war in Iraq: we artists have the duty to give hope. And this album I conceived before, at the end of the pandemic, about the happiness found after having lost so much spontaneity ». But is the process that led him to sculpt successes like “I do it for you” just as spontaneous today? “Nothing has changed in my production path: you have to sit down, have good songs and believe in rock’n’roll”.

He is also risen thanks to us, after the world boom of the Måneskin. He knows them and appreciates them, Bryan: «They are great, because, when they were young, they knew how to break the rules. And they have good songs: at first it can also help you with aesthetics, then it’s not enough anymore ». They are at the (dazzling) beginning, he is a mature and staid man: “After having two children, I feel more in control of myself, at 62 I am in control of what happens to me, before things happened more by chance” . Unless Covid gets in the way: when he came to Milan for the calendar he was “caught” at Malpensa: “A nightmare – he says today with a smile – an unfortunate and stupid situation, I had to remain closed in the hotel for you for two weeks ». The photograph, again, he who also immortalized Queen Elizabeth and Gorbachev, would go to the front to tell the war in Ukraine? “No, I’m a portraitist, you need to know how to do it and above all have a frontline attitude that I don’t have” And for Bryan on the front line, to solve the troubles of the world, there should be women, as he sings in “I Ain ‘t Worth Shit Without You », I’m not worth a c … without you. That is Alicia Grimaldi, the partner with whom he had precisely and belatedly the two children: “Yes – he concludes – the planet would be a better place if it were governed by them”
