The three shootings in Washington took place between March 3 and 9, while the New York shootings were both on Saturday, March 12. The first two attacks, in the early morning of March 3 and March 8, were not yet fatal. The victims were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. That was not the case with a man who was found dead in Washington on March 9 with multiple stab and gunshot wounds.

In New York City, Mayor Eric Adams told reporters on Sunday that an attacker had attacked two different homeless men sleeping on the street in Manhattan at two different times Saturday. He opened fire on them. One of the two victims died on the spot, the other was taken to hospital.

Adams called the shootings “horrific”. “Two people were shot while sleeping in the street – they didn’t commit a crime, they just slept in the street,” he said at a news conference. “We need to find the person who did this, and we need the help of New Yorkers.”

Police believe the killings in New York and Washington are related due to similarities in the nature of the attacks and the living conditions of the victims. The evidence that she has collected in the meantime also points in that direction.
