Oscar Favorite “The Power of the Dog” Wins BAFTAs for Best Picture and Best Director, Will Smith Awarded Best Actor

Traditionally, the BAFTAs two weeks before the Oscars are awarded are a good indicator of American film awards. The British Film Awards were presented at the Royal Albert Hall in London. “The power of the dog”who has 12 Oscar nominations, wins the two most important BAFTAs, ahead of best movie on best direction.

Director Jane Campion is thus the second consecutive female director to be awarded at the BAFTAs in those categories. Last year, Chloé Zhao won both awards for “Nomadland”, both at the BAFTAs and at the Oscars, by the way.

Campion is only the third female director to be awarded a BAFTA. She was not in London to collect her prize. Her lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch – with a blue/yellow pin on his costume, in support of Ukraine – has received that BAFTA. With a joke, because on stage he pretends to deliver his own prepared speech. Unfortunately for Cumberbatch: he himself is not one of the winners.
