Thionville. The five cults in unison for peace in Ukraine

How did you come up with the idea of this interreligious ceremony for peace in Ukraine?

Mordechai SULTAN, Rabbi of Thionville “A few days ago, on the initiative of the Chief Rabbi of Metz and Moselle, Bruno Fiszon and with the support of the municipality of Messina, an interreligious ceremony for peace in Ukraine was organized at the Cloître des Récollets. This is how I came up with the idea of contacting my friends from other religions (Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox and Muslims) and asking them to meet for this noble cause, that of peace and support for the oppressed. I thank them most sincerely for having immediately accepted the invitation. I would also like to thank the mayor, Mr Pierre Cuny, for being associated with this ceremony and for making the multifunctional space of Veymerange available to us. The evening will begin at 8 p.m. and will see different speeches follow one another. But we will be more in a logic of prayers than speeches. We will not be like on a TV set commenting on the news, some do it much better than us. We just want to find ourselves in a moment of brotherhood and union. »

What are the relations between the different cults in Thionville?

“Thionville is a town on a human scale where life is good. Interreligious dialogue has always been extremely fruitful there, in particular thanks to the impetus of my predecessor, Rabbi Ariel Rebibo, to whom I would like to pay special tribute. But of course, we did not wait for the war in Ukraine to find ourselves again: I maintain permanent and fraternal contacts with all the other religions represented in Thionville. As such, a large interreligious meeting was already scheduled for this spring at the community center of the Jewish Community of Thionville. »

How did the man of faith that you are react after the beginning of the conflict and what were the actions that you implemented?

“As you say, I am a religious person, not a politician. The answers that I am able to offer are not military, geopolitical or economic. On the other hand, what I try to bring, at my humble level, is sincere prayer, unity in the face of adversity and hatred and of course mobilization in favor of refugees. Our community has thus associated itself with the collection in favor of the refugees organized by the Town Hall and the charities of Thionville, by making a contribution on the part of all our members. We also issued an appeal for the reception of displaced Ukrainians in Thionville, which found a remarkable echo since we very quickly obtained several accommodation options. »
