FSV Mainz 05 continues to be hit hard by the Omicron wave. Numerous actors are still in isolation. The requested transfer of the game against FC Augsburg has now been granted.
Bundesliga soccer club FSV Mainz 05 cannot play its upcoming point game on Saturday at FC Augsburg (3.30 p.m. / Sky) due to the corona outbreak among the professionals and supervisors.
The Rheinhessen submitted a corresponding application to the German Football League (DFL) on Wednesday (March 9, 2022), and one day later the league granted Mainz’s request. “The match will be postponed because 1. FSV Mainz 05 still does not have the minimum number of players required by the DFL rules of play due to positive corona findings,” said the DFL in its justification.
FSV Mainz had to postpone the game against Borussia Dortmund
Most recently, the FSV reported the 20th corona case. Due to the massive outbreak, the home game against Borussia Dortmund planned for last Sunday (March 6) had already been postponed to March 16. The club has always emphasized that the licensed player area is completely immunized, but apparently the Omicron wave has also reached the Mainz squad.
On Wednesday, the Augsburgers still expected the game to be played – they saw everything else as nonsensical. “Since the DFL has also informed us that the rules of the game are the decisive criterion, we assume that the game will also take place on Saturday in accordance with the statutes,” said sporting director Stefan Reuter. The 1990 world champion did not explain how he came to his assessment.
DFL requirements: 16 eligible players must be ready for action
According to the DFL rules of play, at least 16 players are required to play a game, including at least nine licensed players, including a goalkeeper. Suspended and injured players are considered “available”.
