VfL Wolfsburg in Freiburg: Florian Kohfeldt expects a 50:50 game in the Bundesliga

It is the last of three ex-weeks for Max Kruse (33). First 2-2 at former employer Borussia Mönchengladbach, then 1-0 against Union Berlin. On Saturday (3.30 p.m.) Kruse and VfL Wolfsburg have to go to SC Freiburg, for which the striker played in the 2012/13 season. For VfL coach Florian Kohfeldt (39) a game with all possibilities.

“Absolute 50:50 game”

The Wolfsburg coach is already warning his professionals: “Freiburg defends in a similar way to Union, but is stronger in combination. So we need to bring more to take something with us.”

SC Freiburg has established itself in the table region that VfL Wolfsburg was aiming for before the season. The team from Breisgau is sixth, just two points behind fourth place in the Champions League.

Kohfeldt’s praise: “They are playing an exceptionally good season, are very stable, set good standards.” And midfield leader Maximilian Arnold (27) admits: “Of course we would like to be in SC Freiburg’s situation.”

Incidentally, SC Freiburg is the reason why Kohfeldt became the coach of VfL Wolfsburg. In the first half of the season, the Breisgau team won 2-0 in the VW Arena on Matchday 9, and one day later Mark van Bommel (44) was fired as coach. Three days later, on October 26, Kohfeldt took over.

“It’s a turbulent season for us,” says sports director Marcel Schäfer (37). “We could have saved ourselves a few things. But we can look back positively on the last few games.”

In the table for the last five games, VfL is fourth with ten points and Freiburg sixth with eight points.
