Meeting with mezzo-soprano Eugénie Joneau

Update of March 10, 2022: Congratulations to Eugénie Joneau elected “Revelation Artist lyric” of the Victories of Classical Music 2022 on Wednesday March 9!

Trained at the Lyon Conservatory with Pierre Ribemont, she perfected her skills with Anaïk Morel, Françoise Pollet, Irène Kudela, Marie-Claude Papion and Antoine Palloc. In 2021/22, she joined the opera company Opera Fuoco under the direction of David Stern and took part in the solidarity concert Unisson at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. At the end of October 2021, she won the 1st Revelations prize at the 6th Avignon Young Hopes Competition. She then moved on to the prestigious “Bel Canto” Academy of the Treilles Foundation where she worked with Ivan Alexandre, Julien Benhamou, Alain Perroux and the great Patrizia Ciofi.

How do you define yourself in 3 words?

Sensitive, creative and….. curious!

How do you decide to become an opera singer?

Good question ! Music has been part of my life since I was a child. It was finally at 19 that I went to see an opera for the first time and there I said to myself “this is what I want to do”. It was obvious.

Who are your favorite artists?

I like a lot of different styles of music. I love Debussy, Queen, Julien Doré via Deep Purple!

You lived in Lyon, are you still from Lyon?

Almost ! I have just moved to a small village in the metropolis of Lyon. I fell in love with this city and it has adopted me for almost 10 years.

What is your favorite place in Lyon?

There are so many… When I was studying at the Conservatory, I really liked going to contemplate Lyon from the panorama of the Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourvière.

What memory do you keep of the Lyon Conservatory?

These were pivotal years as they say, I trained with Pierre Ribémont and I worked alongside. I was looking forward to being able to make a full living from my profession!

What are your upcoming projects ?

You can find me in the opera Jenufa de Janáček at the Grand Théâtre de Genève in May then in various concerts, notably at the Teatro Réal in Madrid, at the Cadaques music festival and at the Radio France festival in Montpellier for a recital alongside Florent Lattuga on July 25.

The 29th edition of the Victoires de la Musique Classique will take place on March 9 at the Grand Théâtre de Provence in Aix-en-Provence. It will be broadcast live on France 3 and France Musique.

The 3 lyrical artists and 3 instrumental soloists nominated in the Revelation categories at the Victoires de la Musique Classique 2022 recorded a concert on Radio France (broadcast on France Musique on January 31 and still available online).
