++ Corona case numbers (03/10/2022): RKI reports record number – expert warns of the beginning of a “sixth wave”

The RKI publishes data on the current corona situation in Germany every day. How are the incidence and new infections currently developing?

Update from Thursday, March 10th, 2022, 10 a.m.: The bioinformatician Lars Kaderali from Greifswald, member of the expert council of the federal government, sees Germany in a new corona wave. “This is mainly due to the fact that the omicron subtype BA.2 is even more infectious than the original variant,” said Kaderali of the German Press Agency. In addition, there would be the easing of the corona measures. “In combination, both lead to the increasing number of cases.” The RKI has been reporting an increase in the nationwide seven-day incidence for days. The Stiko chairman Thomas Mertens had previously warned of worrying scenarios in Germany due to the omicron subtype BA.2.

Expert Council member Kaderali nevertheless considers the easing announced by the federal government to be justifiable. “Although the corona numbers are increasing nationwide, the situation in the hospitals is still undramatic,” argues the bioinformatician. “But you should only loosen up carefully and only with the option of going back if you realize that it’s getting too much,” he added.

Corona situation in Germany: experts expect the curve to rise in summer as well

According to a federal and state decision, most of the corona requirements are to be abolished on March 20, but “basic protection” should remain. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) and Justice Minister Marco Buschmann (FDP) presented a draft for a new legal basis on Wednesday (March 9th, 2022). This enables, for example, further mask requirements in clinics and nursing homes as well as further compulsory tests in schools. If there is a “concrete danger of a dynamically spreading infection situation”, the state parliaments should also be able to decide on further conditions for regions.

With regard to a possible decline in the infection curve in summer, Kaderali said: “The seasonal effect will probably not be sufficient to bring the incidence down to 0.” He believes that Minister of Health Lauterbach believes that there could also be a corona wave in the summer months plausible. The previous openings could already mean that “we will see a very, very strong increase again and then we will go into the summer with high incidences.”

Corona in Germany: more new infections than ever before

For the first time in the corona pandemic, more than 250,000 new corona infections were transmitted to the Robert Koch Institute within one day. According to the RKI, the health authorities reported 262,752 cases in 24 hours on Thursday morning. A week ago there were 210,673 infections

The number of corona cases in Germany

Experts assume a high number of cases that are not recorded in the RKI data. One reason is the limited capacity of health authorities, for example, and contacts are often only tracked to a limited extent. In addition, according to the ALM laboratory association, there is now a larger number of people whose infection is no longer confirmed by a PCR test – these infections are therefore not included in the official statistics.

According to the new information, 259 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 267 deaths. The RKI has counted 16,504,822 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected.

The number of corona-infected patients who came to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was 6.62 according to the RKI on Wednesday (6.15 on Tuesday). Among them are many people with a positive corona test who have another main illness.

The RKI gave the number of recovered people on Thursday as 12,963,800. The number of people who died from or involved a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 125,023. (dpa, sk, df)
