What about the little ones in our cultural institutions? How is the offer structure of cultural institutions for kindergarten groups? How are the offers designed and who implements them?
In order to gain a first systematic insight into these questions, Prof. Dr. Fabian Hofmann, Head of the Culture – Education – Participation course. Art & Education in Early Childhood, MA, and Nina Stark, program coordinator, conducted a digital survey in 2021.
“The level of knowledge and research on early childhood arts education in cultural institutions has so far been very low. In cultural statistics, for example, the age group under 6 years is hardly taken into account,” explains Prof. Dr. Fabian Hofmann. There is also no data on the qualifications or level of further training of educational staff in cultural institutions. So he initiated the study.
The results of this first survey show that although there are many – by no means all – cultural institutions, there are offers for children under the age of 6, but only rarely for children under the age of 4. And employees who practice early childhood arts education there are very rarely specifically qualified in early childhood education. 51% of them have never attended further training for this age group. In this respect there is a lot to do. Further, detailed monitoring and the consideration of the age group in cultural statistics is necessary, but the practice in cultural institutions must also be changed.
According to Prof. Dr. Fabian Hofmann contribute to it. “Only by trained and appropriately sensitized professionals can cultural education in early childhood be represented internally and externally,” says the course director.
