On March 6, the White House announced that work with Poland for the transfer of Polish MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine. March 8 Poland suggested transfer all of their MiG-29s to the US with the expectation of further transfer to Ukraine.
Kirby does not consider this proposal reasonable.
“It’s just not clear to us whether there is a substantive rationale for this. We will continue to consult with Poland and our other NATO allies on this issue and the complex logistical issues, but we do not consider Poland’s proposal to be justified,” he said.
Kirby also said that the idea put forward by Poland is too risky as the US and NATO seek to avoid a direct conflict between the Alliance and Russia.
CNN sources at the White House say the administration of US President Joe Biden was caught off guard by Poland’s proposal.
