A Light White Blanket Will Cover Most of Our Area Wednesday – NBC New York (47)

After a couple of days of record temperatures in New York City and across our tri-state area, a light white blanket is now expected on Wednesday as forecasters predict the region could experience some snow accumulation.

The Big Apple is well below the areas that would see the heaviest snowfall in the winter system, according to the National Weather Service’s probabilistic snowfall predictive models, which are used to supplement the agency’s forecast and show uncertainties during weather events. .

The latest forecast shows that parts of New York City are likely to get about six-tenths of an inch of snow, with nearby Newark seeing slightly lower totals.

There’s about a 10% chance the five boroughs will see between one and two inches of snow, the National Weather Service predicts.

Under this scenario, Newark and parts of Manhattan would get about two inches of snow, while areas farther east would see about an inch, the agency forecasts.

While a large accumulation is unlikely, the National Weather Service indicates there is a 50% chance that some regions of New York City will see at least a tenth of an inch of snow.

However, that probability percentage dips further east and could change depending on the system’s final trajectory.

Newark has about a 31% chance of reaching within an inch of Wednesday’s storm, while John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens has only a 12% chance, the agency’s predictive map shows.

NEW JERSEY

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Sussex County and western Passaic County, where a storm system is likely to bring light snow and sleet Wednesday, which could make some roads slippery for drivers. drivers.

Although the storm is expected to drop just an inch of snow or less across most of the northern half of the state, some areas of Sussex and Passaic could see 2 to 4 inches of snow, particularly at higher elevations, they said. the meteorologists.

Drivers in the Sussex region should “plan for slippery road conditions,” the weather service said in its advisory, which was issued just before 3 p.m. Tuesday.

“Hazardous conditions could affect morning or afternoon travel on Wednesday,” the warning states.

The National Weather Service is predicting light snow and possible sleet in northern and central New Jersey, and rain in most of southern New Jersey.

The Sussex advisory, which also covers Carbon and Monroe counties in northeastern Pennsylvania, will go into effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Passaic advisory will be active from 5 am to 7 pm on Wednesday.

“Snow accumulations should be limited to unpaved surfaces,” the National Weather Service said in an emailed forecast update. “However, if the snow falls hard enough, especially at higher elevations, then untreated surfaces could be covered in sleet/snow for a while.”

Although snow will be a minor factor in central Jersey, along the coast and parts of the southern interior, with less than an inch expected, forecasters say a winter mix of snow, rain and occasional sleet could occur through along the Interstate 95 corridor.

In other parts of the state, precipitation is expected to fall as straight rain due to warmer air temperatures.

The weather service said precipitation should begin to fall around 3 a.m.
