The Kansas City Chiefs unsurprisingly gave away their franchise tag: offensive tackle Orlando Brown, who came to Kansas City via trade from Baltimore last offseason, will not become a free agent, as expected.
Offensive Linemen Franchise Tag will be priced at approximately $16.5 million this year.
In Brown’s case, however, it can be assumed that the Chiefs see the day more as a placeholder: The day primarily guarantees that Brown will not become a free agent in the coming week when the new league year begins.
Both sides now have until July 15 to negotiate a long-term deal that would then replace the tag. If Brown and the Chiefs don’t reach an agreement by that deadline, the offensive tackle would only be able to play under the tag next season — and then become a free agent again.
Also, from a Chiefs perspective, it’s worth noting that safety Tyrann Mathieu, whose contract is also expiring, will most likely make an appearance. Brown is the first player this year to receive the tag. Teams have until the afternoon of March 8 – 10:00 p.m. German time – to award a tag.
Other contenders to get the tag by the deadline include Packers receiver Davante Adams, Bucs receiver Chris Godwin, Bengals safety Jessie Bates, Cowboys tight end Dalton Schultz and Chargers receiver Mike Williams.
