The average household in the United States pays more than $10,000 in federal income taxes each year. While that obligation is national, there is a big difference when it comes to state and local taxes.
Yet New York residents owe more in taxes than those in 47 other states and the District of Columbia, according to a wallethub studywhich compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia to national medians.
The Empire State has the third highest tax rate in the nation, but some taxpayers don’t know what kind of taxes they pay, like parking.
Sales tax applies to parking, garage, or storage services of motor vehicles in a garage, parking lot, or other commercial place providing these services (but not if the garage is part of a private one- or two-family residence) .
Motor vehicle parking, garage, and storage services within New York City are subject to the 4% state tax, the 6% New York City local tax, and the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District tax ( MCTD) of ⅜%, for a combined rate of 10⅜%.
There is an additional 8% parking tax in Manhattan, for a combined state and local rate of 18⅜%, which applies unless the purchaser is a certified exempt resident.
In Manhattan, the parking tax is 18.375%, but the exemption reduces the amount of the tax by 8%, reducing the amount of tax a New Yorker must pay to 10.375%.
To qualify for the exemption, the vehicle must be registered to your primary residence in Manhattan and be for personal use only.
You can find additional information and/or apply for tax exemption for Manhattan residents at https://www1.nyc.gov/site/finance/benefits/vehicles-manhattan-resident-parking-tax-exemption.page.
