Roach says China, instead of promoting negotiations, should “threaten to pull the rug out under Putin if he does not play ball.”

The economist says it will be a mistake for Beijing to intensify its partnership with Russia, while large parts of the world are putting pressure on Putin. According to Roach, this could lead to China being associated as a conspiracy to Russia for “a long, long time to come”.

“He can not afford to continue on that course – it would be a mistake of historical proportions for Xi Jinping,” said Roach.
