One of the Chaplin classics, not unfairly included in the list of the 100 best American comedies by the American Film Institute. While the troops of the dictator Hynkel occupy the neighboring country of Austerlich, his doppelganger, the Jewish hairdresser Charlie, manages to escape from the concentration camp. The guards chasing him encounter Hynkel, who is arrested instead of Charlie. Charlie, in turn, is mistaken for the dictator and forced to give a speech at the invasion. He uses the opportunity to make a passionate appeal to the world for peace, freedom and equality for all people.
In his unique satire, Charlie Chaplin succeeded in combining his pantomime skills with the form of talkies, which he had previously disdained. Chaplin’s methods range from comical slapstick interludes to open appeals for artists to take a stand on fascism.
