According to AFP, the meeting will be held informally and behind closed doors. The United States has requested the meeting.
It comes after North Korean state media reported that Pyongyang conducted a test of what they called an intelligence satellite on Saturday. Analysts believe it was a poorly concealed test of a ballistic missile.
A diplomat says that in addition to exchanging information on the latest test, the Security Council should try to pressure North Korea’s ally China to sign a joint statement.
– We only need a very small statement to show North Korea that the Security Council is united, says the diplomat, who speaks anonymously.
China has so far refused to join any of the Security Council’s actions against North Korea since 2017, when the UN imposed economic sanctions on the country.
