“Against the background of the continuing high infection pressure from neighboring regions, there is a risk that bluetongue disease could enter Baden-Württemberg again. I therefore strongly recommend the continuation of the voluntary vaccination of cattle, sheep and goats against the bluetongue virus BTV 4 and 8 – especially since Baden-Württemberg is aiming for the recognition of the freedom status for bluetongue disease for the entire state this year,” said Minister of Agriculture Peter Hauk MdL in Stuttgart.
The Standing Vaccination Committee for Veterinary Medicine (StiKo Vet) points out the risk of BTV 4 and BTV 8 entering Germany again and the ongoing need to protect cattle and small ruminants from the disease by vaccinating against the bluetongue virus. “Vaccination can prevent disease in susceptible animals. In addition, it will then be possible to bring vaccinated animals from a restricted area under easier conditions,” explained Minister Hauk.
Pet owners who wish to voluntarily vaccinate their animals against bluetongue should notify their attending veterinarian of the number and type of animals to be vaccinated. The vaccine order and vaccination is made by the veterinarian.
financial compensation
“In 2022 there will again be financial support from the state of Baden-Württemberg and the animal disease fund Baden-Württemberg for vaccinations in cattle, sheep and goats. The Tierseuchenkasse will reimburse €0.50 for cattle and €0.25 for sheep per vaccination. The state of Baden-Württemberg also supports the vaccination of cattle with €0.50, sheep with €0.25 and goats with €0.40 per vaccination,” said Minister Hauk.
