Actor, singer and Broadway star John “Johnny” Brown is dead. He died on March 2 at the age of 84, his family has now announced. As his daughter Sharon Brown confirmed to the US portal “TMZ”, her father suffered cardiac arrest shortly after a doctor’s visit in his hometown of Los Angeles. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died. The appointment was a routine check of his pacemaker and the sudden death was a shock, reports the actress.

“Our Hearts Are Broken”

On her Instagram account she mourns with emotional lines. “Our family is devastated. Our hearts are broken. We can hardly breathe,” she wrote alongside a photo of her father. In the post, Sharon Brown asked for privacy for herself, her siblings and her mother “to process the unthinkable.”

Her parents had been married for more than 60 years, and the actor left a large family. “It’s a shock. He was literally ripped out of our lives. It’s not real for us yet,” writes the 60-year-old and concludes: “Dad was the absolute best. We love him so much.”

Colleagues and fans mourn

Many fans and colleagues also said goodbye to Johnny Brown on social media. Janet Jackson, with whom he starred on the sitcom Good Times, wrote: “Such fond memories of our time together. You were full of laughter and always beaming. I love you and will miss you.”

The Florida-born actor started his Hollywood career in the 1960s. His big break came in 1975 with the hit CBS series Good Times. At first he only played a supporting role as construction manager Nathan Bookman, but then made it into one of the main characters due to his great popularity. He appeared in five seasons until the show ended in 1979.

Thereafter, Brown starred in numerous other Hollywood productions in a career spanning more than 50 years. He also acted on Broadway and made a name for himself as a singer.
