Milan striker Olivier Giroud, 35, stepped forward on Sunday and lowered Napoli to a 1-0 victory in Serie A. The 35-year-old thus had to celebrate his eighth league goal of the season and believes that it was an important victory in the top battle.
– There are three important points because it was a match against a competitor for the title. It was not a decisive match, but it was important to win. We started very well and played with a lot of energy and determination to play our football. We were focused until the end and it was a well-deserved victory, says Giroud according to Milannews.it.
He continues:
– I try to do my best when I’m in the penalty area and I always try to be in the right place at the right time. I am very pleased. In the first half we could have managed the counterattacks a little better and especially the last pass. We did well in defense and all players worked hard.
Giroud is in good shape, but will now face tougher competition in the future, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic is back after injury problems and made a comeback on Sunday.
When asked who will start in the future, the Frenchman answers:
– I do not want to talk about such things. My job is also to be a big brother to the young players. We have a lot of quality, but we need to talk a little more. I know how important it is to communicate and try to encourage it, he says.
During the season, Giroud and Ibrahimovic have not played much together. Instead, they have mainly taken turns starting matches, as both had injury problems.
Milan tops the table with two points down to second-placed Inter, who have one match less played in Serie A. Milan will next face Empoli at home on Saturday in the league.
